You did a beautiful job on your scenes today.  Thank you for your hard work.

Task #1:  Search the internet and find the full text of the short story entitled "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" by Kurt Vonnegut.  Read it.  Highlight themes or lines you remember from Macbeth.  Formulate an opinion.  Why might Mr. Vonnegut have chosen to entitle his story "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"?  Look forward to a lively discussion for warm up on Friday.

We will finish our film then.

For Wednesday, February 5

MAKE SOME DECISIONS:

What scene might you want to analyze and produce for your Director's notebook?
Where will you set your scene?
What time period will you set your scene in?
What characters will you focus on?
What motif?
What props?

You may want to wait to decide on which scene exactly until we get further in the film, but you can start planning now.

For Monday, February 3

AWESOME AND INCREDIBLE JOB TODAY~  I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!

NEWS ALERT!  Macbeth Director's Notebook will be due on February 13, 2014.  THIS IS A NEW DUE DATE.

On Monday,
You will work with your partner to solidify plans for a performance on Wednesday.  Grade Matrix for duet acting is the same as your grade matrix for the dagger soliloquy.

For this weekend:
Task #1:  Look over your script for Macbeth Duet Acting Performance

Task #2:  Find the poem "Out, Out" by Robert Frost on the internet.  Print out a copy.  Annotate the poem as to literary device.  Now connect each literary device to meaning.  You should create a hand-written (or typed if you prefer) chart in which you list a quote in the left column, literary device in the middle column and tie it to meaning in the right column.

For instance:

"snarled and rattled"   onomatopoeia/personification   monster noises/saw is alive/saw is villain

Task #3:
Read House on Mango Street "Meme Ortiz" through "A Rice Sandwich" (21-45). 
Write a sentence at the end of each chapter telling me something that stands out to you.

For "Darius & the Clouds"~Take each paragraph of the story (3) and write a 3-5 lines stanza of a poem.  Your poem should mirror Darius's story.  However, the reflection can be shimmery (a reflection only in mood/tone), OR it can be an exact representation.

For "A Rice Sandwich"~Create a chart comparing the characters Rachel from "Eleven" and Esperanza from "A Rice Sandwich".  You can compose Rachel's side of the chart from memory OR look up the story if you want.

For Friday, January 24

Memorize Macbeth's "Is this a dagger ..." soliloquy.  You will PERFORM this speech in front of the class on Friday.  You will be graded on characterization, vocal variety, and fluency.  It will be important for you to express Macbeth's state of mind whether you are performing as a Scottish, Elizabethan England play or as a caveman from middle earth.... 

Anything you add to your performance will work to your benefit: costumes, props, music.

You should look over the scene you will perform with your partner.  It does not need to be memorized, but your reading should have meaning and purpose.

For Wednesday, January 22

Read the following vignettes from House on Mango Street:.

Cathy Queen of  Cats *characterization of Cathy/Esperanza (worksheet provided)
Our Good Day *look at dialogue
Laughter *annotate figurative language
Gil's Furniture Bought and Sold *annotate especially for diction (connotations and figurative language) AND sentence structure--how might these contribute to meaning.

Complete the pages in your packet.

Write a sentence that mirrors the narrator's view of herself within her family:  I am a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor.  After composing and writing your sentence, illustrate it on the same sheet of paper.   You will share your illustrated sentences with the class on Wednesday.

Prep for "Is this a dagger..." performance.

For Thursday, January 16

Revise and Perfect your essay over Sandra Cisneros' "Eleven."  Remember, this will be your first major grade for the nine weeks.  Ask yourself:  Have I answered the prompt?  Am I clearly defining Rachel's inner characteristics?  Is my essay organized?  Do I have transitions and clear quotation sandwiches?  Do I have a minimum of 6 concrete examples in this essay?


In House on Mango Street, read:  "Hairs", "Boys and Girls", and "My Name". Annotate each vignette.

After reading "My Name", complete the handout provided in class.  Make sure to annotate each reading selection. 

DUE DATE:  FRIDAY, JANUARY 24.  Begin memorization work on "Is this is a dagger..."?  You might

highlight the copy of your speech; figure out which words you will accentuate, what gestures you might use...
